Conversations Part 1 (2021)
This endurance project took place from January to March 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic. I recorded a daily audio journal entry for seven weeks. Each day I responded to the previous day’s recording, and then contributed some new reflections, slowly building up into a conversation between my past, present, and future selves.
The track Self Talk (Conversations with myself) Part 1 was inspired by the work of Lou Sheppard, and was an experiment in translation and masking. I took the daily recordings and embarked on a process of translation to turn the audio into something new, something that would mask the intimacy of the original conversations. I ran the audio though a program that identified the different sounds as notes, and then created sheet music. I then ran the sheet music through a program that would play the piece on the piano. The final composition retained much of the feeling of uncertainty, anxiety, and occasional levity that existed in the original conversation. The technological mediation of this piece mirrors the abrupt shift online in the early days of the pandemic.
